Exciting times in cartography as map projections have been given top billing across global news! This is all thanks to a UN where a resolution was passed to promote map projections that better reflect the true size of countries in global maps. I’ve been asked to comment about this development across several media shows and on the BBC News website. In the video above, I am talking with BBC News shortly before delegates voted on the motion.
Following the vote I spoke with Radio 4’s “The World Tonight” about the developments.
And finally to Times Radio.
My key message: This resolution invites us to think more deeply about the maps and is an impetus for mapmakers to be more creative in the choices they the make!

It’s all been a bit reminiscent of this iconic sketch from the West Wing, where they discuss the merits of the Peters projection over the Mercator with the “Organisation of Cartographers for Social Equality”.
